I have been watching CentOS for a while now.

Do you think it is a suitable flavor for personel laptops (in terms of hardware support for sound and Wlan cards)

I have noticed these to be two particularly painful points in most every distribution.

I have recently traded in stability for functionality, since ubuntu was the only flavor that recognized my wide screen display on my HP entertainment notebook.

CentOS is best on dedicated servers with long lives. For your laptop, I would go with the latest Fedora. Fedora is a preview of what is coming in Red Hat and CentOS. Fedora is the most likely to support your wireless card and to sleep/suspend correctly. I do like Ubuntu, but it is a completely different flavor. Choose your own adventure.
